Choosing the Right Lumber for Colorado's Climate
Colorado's Western Slope presents unique challenges for building materials. With elevations ranging from 4,500 to over 14,000 feet, intense UV exposure, low humidity, and temperature swings of 50 degrees or more in a single day, choosing the right lumber is critical to a long-lasting structure.
How Altitude Affects Lumber
At higher elevations, wood dries out faster than in more humid climates. The thin, dry mountain air pulls moisture from lumber rapidly, which means that boards can shrink, warp, and crack more quickly if not properly selected and treated. This is especially problematic for framing lumber that arrives at the job site with a high moisture content.
We recommend using kiln-dried lumber for framing and structural applications, as it has already been dried to an appropriate moisture content — typically 19% or below. This reduces on-site shrinkage and helps prevent nail pops, drywall cracks, and squeaky floors that result from excessive wood movement.
Best Lumber Species for Exterior Use
For exterior applications like decking, siding, and fencing, material selection is even more important. Pressure-treated lumber remains a popular and economical choice for structural components like deck framing and fence posts. The treatment protects against rot and insect damage even in prolonged ground contact.
Naturally rot-resistant species like Western Red Cedar and Redwood are excellent choices for visible exterior surfaces. Cedar's natural oils repel insects and resist decay, and it handles Colorado's freeze-thaw cycles well. However, all wood exposed to our intense UV radiation should be sealed or stained regularly — typically every 1-2 years at high altitude.
Engineered Lumber Options
Engineered lumber products like LVL (Laminated Veneer Lumber), I-joists, and glulam beams offer consistent performance and are less susceptible to the warping and twisting that can affect solid-sawn lumber in dry climates. They're increasingly popular for headers, beams, and floor systems in mountain construction.
